I think both the clutch and the fan are junk so I ordered a JHM electric conversion kit. It should fix my problem while reducing some of the parasitic losses on the engine. It was about $100 over just getting a new fan and clutch but this should be better. I’ll be sure to post a couple pics once I enter the service position.

Wait, the Allroad has a clutched belt-driven fan? Really? My mom’s old ‘89 100 had an electric fan (slant-5 with the radiator offset) and her S4 (2.7T!) had only electric fans too... what gives?

edit: some Googling seems to indicate the S4 *DID* have a viscous-couple fan originally, but the previous owner (she was the second owner) must have already converted it to electric-only fans.
